Van Trip 2007
Day 30
Kilometres travelled today ......170
Distance from Home........2222 Kilometres
Left Townsville at 9:40am and stopped at the Frosty Mango....70 km north ....for morning tea.
Arrived at the home of our friends Ralph & Lee at Port Hinchinbrook about 12:30pm and parked our van on a vacant block next to their house. Ralph very kindly plugged power to our van. Their home overlooks the channel leading to the Marina and is not only a magnificent home but also has a beautiful view. The area was very badly damaged during the cyclone in 2011, when cyclone Yasi transformed the Port Hinchinbrook marina into a wrecking yard for yachts. Photographs of boats thrown onto the verandahs of waterfront homes went around the world.
Fortunately Ralph & Lee's house was spared any major damage but their pontoon and boats suffered severe damage.
Situated half-way between Townsville and Cairns, Cardwell is the gateway to Hinchinbrook Island, Australia's largest Island National Park. World Heritage listed natural wonders such as the Great Barrier Reef and Hinchinbrook Island National Park are right at their door step. Uninhabited, except for an eco lodge at Cape Richards, the island abounds in flora, fauna, crystal streams, palm-fringed beaches and mangrove waterways.
We had a wonderful time with Ralph & Lee, undoubtedly the best Van Park we have ever stayed in. Lee cooked a great dinner which we very much enjoyed, washed down with glasses of Ralph's best wine.
