Van Trip 2007
Day 31.....1st August
Kilometres travelled .......193
Kilometres from home......2415
Left Ralph & Lee at 10:00am and drove directly to Cairns. Arrived Lake Placid Van Park about 12:30, Site 13 (same site as last time) $36.00 per night Top Tourist. We were happy to find that our neighbours on one side were Henry & Valma Porter, and on the other side, Danny & Valerie Tokell. We met both couples on our last visit here two years ago,and it was great to catch up with them again.
The weather was beautiful and sunny ...26 degrees.
Lake Placid is located approx. 15 mins drive north of Cairns. The Caravan Park offers caravan and tent sites as well as budget or luxury accommodation in a 14 acre tropical rainforest resort setting. The park is adjacent to the cool, crystal clear waters of Lake Placid, at the base of the World Heritage area of the Barron River Gorge National Park. The park is central to the main tourist attractions such as Skyrail, the Kuranda Scenic Railway and northern beaches, and is the perfect place for a relaxing holiday.
Day 32.....Cairns.....2nd August
Did a day trip to Kuranda for lunch with Henry, Valma Danny & Valerie. Very enjoyable day exploring all the little markets and dress shops.
Kuranda is on the Atherton Tablelands 25 kilometres from Cairns via the Kuranda Range Road . It is surrounded by rainforest. In 2006 Kuranda had a population of 1611.
Day 33 to 35......Cairns 3rd to 5th August
Jude & I took a drive to Barron Falls Lookout where we walked through the rainforest for 1.3 kilometres for a great view of the falls and also a view of the Skyway travelling over the top of the rainforest.
Following this walk we drove out to Mareeba (63 km from Cairns) where we had a beautiful afternoon tea at the "Coffee Works".
Mareeba is on the Atherton Tablelands. The town is 417 metres above sea level on the confluence of the Barron River, Granite Creek and Emerald Creek. The town's name is derived from an Aboriginal word meaning meeting of the waters.
The Mareeba area was first settled by Europeans in 1877 by John Atherton, who arrived with cattle at Emerald End, which is just north of the town today. Mareeba quickly became a busy coach stop for Cobb & Co on the road from Port Douglas to Herberton. From 1942 to 1945, up to 10,000 Australian and US service personnel used Mareeba Airfield as a staging post for battles in New Guinea and the Pacific.
Day 36......Cairns.......6th August
Met up with the Gosford Tourers at Smithfield Shopping Centre for lunch.....Terry Bowditch, Mary Beard & Ken & Caroline Austin.
Day 37 to 38......Cairns.......7th & 8th August
Ian & Margaret Parkin from Tasmania visited us in the park for morning tea. They had been travelling with my brother Kerry & his wife Peggy since leaving Tasmania. They separated at Georgetown on their way across from Normanton to Cairns. We first met Ian & Margaret at Rollingstone Beach 2 years ago.
Day 39 to 41......9th to 11th August
Took a drive to Palm Cove on Friday, a beautiful day, and had lunch at Reef House. It brought back happy memories as it was this hotel that we stayed at on a previous trip 24 years ago.
After leaving Palm Cove we drove to Mossman Gorge where we walked through the rainforest to the Gorge, the scenery was spectacular. The newly completed tourist centre was very impressive.
The trip back to Lake Placid along the coast road must be one of the most beautiful coastal drives in Australia. The wonderful little beaches and inlets are breathtaking.
