We arrived late, but not too late so that we missed out on dinner. First stop was to drop our gear off at the hotel and then head out for our first kebab at a cheap restaurant that was very convenient. Matty found a baklava shop (which he visited every night after that) and we headed home. Our first stop the next day was the Grand Bazaar where we did a little bit of shopping, got Van a gold bracelet and had a Turkish coffee and tea. We then moved down to the docks for a fish sandwich which was good, but had a lot of bones. We both found it quite amusing that they were Norwegian frozen fish too. After lunch we checked out the Spice Bazaar followed with a big beer from a roof top bar and then Aya Sofya deserved a visit. That was enough sightseeing for one day so we headed back to our place to freshen up before a delicious meal out where Van had a steak, Matt had an Ottoman lamb dish and we washed it down with a wine from Montepulciano. After dinner we shared an apple water pipe which was an experience.
We started the day with a super tasty pastry pie at a local place and then made our way to Sultanahmet and the Topkapi Palace to see how the Sultans used to live. What a huge place! We had a good look around everywhere but you'd need a whole day to truly get around the whole thing. After this we went back to our rooftop bar for lunch and a relax (no beer though as it was the elections day) before wondering down to the Basilica Cistern. On the way home we stopped for another nargile (water pipe) and a game of checkers, but unfortunately this one didn't agree with Matty and he had to spend some time in the bathroom. A kebab for dinner completed the day.
Last full day on our holiday was a huge shopping day. We went to the main shopping strip where we started at the sports shop together and then parted ways for 4 hours for Van to shop and for Matt to get a Turkish haircut and shave from a barber and enjoy some beers while he read his book. After this we went out for a hamam bath which was an awesome experience, but very hot! Matt was glad we had cold water on hand. After this relaxing excursion we had a light dinner which included a pide, followed with our usual baklava and then it was time to pack for the last time this trip. Back to Stavanger tomorrow!
