Day 1:
Matt's alarm clock went off at 4:15 and we woke up and got on our way back to Thessaloniki airport. Our flight was again unfortunately delayed, this time by one and a half hours. Once we arrived in Athens, the public transport to get to our accommo was fairly painless owing to the city's excellent metro network. We checked in, then grabbed a souvlaki for lunch at a nearby cafe, then had to have a siesta to try to catch up on the missed sleep the night before. After we woke, we walked into Plaka. Apart from Plaka, everything was pretty quiet because it was Sunday. We walked along the market street as the shops were closing up. After a stroll around and an ice cream (pomegranate and strawberry flavours), we headed out to dinner at a cafe that was one of the 'best nearby' per tripadvisor. The dinner was pretty tasty, we had the standard Greek salad plus some meatballs with delicious sauce and some zuchinni cakes. A short metro ride to get home.
Day 2:
Intentions to run were thwarted by the need to sleep. We had a continental breakfast at the hotel then made our way to the 'Acropolis'. Was a pretty impressive place, unfortunately though the Parthenon was being restored/had maintenance going on, so there was a lot of scaffolding around the front of it. We walked down to the Agora also. The whole time we were at the Acropolis the temperature was between 33 and 34deg so it was prettttty hot. After the Acropolis, we found ourself back at the flea market street. We grabbed another souvlaki for lunch then split up for an hour of individual shopping. Signature purchase was a chess set by Matty. Feeling tired from the sun and the walking, we headed back to the accommo for a siesta. Post nap, we walked up a city mountain for a view over Athens. Then we went home to spruce up before heading out to dinner at a restaurant near Plaka. We ordered feta and honey wrapped in filo pastry with balsamic & black sesame seeds, Greek salad, and calamari. It was all pretty tasty. After dinner we headed home and after some reading and packing, we finally got to bed at around half past midnight.
Day 3:
We arrived back from Santorini late and had a quick red wine before getting a good sleep. The next day we visited the Panathenaic stadium and got our last souvlaki for the trip before catching a flight to Istanbul.
