'Twas the night before Christmas
With the gain of two hours in time difference, we touched down in Calgary in time for dinner on Christmas Eve. We were greeted by our buddy Dan at the airport and headed to his sisters flat for dinner. Although the temperature was -18 degrees Celsius, it didn't actually feel as bad as we expected which we learnt was due to the dry air in Calgary (versus the humid air in Toronto). Dinner was a delicious beef curry and on the way to our accommodations we checked out the Christmas lights adoring the netting at the golf course which were pretty well done.
Christmas Day Festivities and Exploring
On Christmas Day, we rose early for the present opening which was set to begin around 8am. We were stoked to receive some great gifts including our fave new Canada gloves and toques, Tim Hortons travel mugs and vouchers, and theTerry's orange chocolate treat which was a new discovery.
After a hearty breakfast of scrambled egg, bacon, and home made cinnamon rolls, we took the opportunity to explore around Calgary - first, we checked out the views across the valley to the Olympic ski jump, roamed around Princess Island, headed for a drive to check out Elbow Creek Falls, and a lake that had since turned into a stream after the floods of 2013.
We headed back mid afternoon and helped with the Calgarian staple of clearing snow from the driveway. The Christmas Day indulgences continued with a charcuterie style afternoon tea washed down with Nancy's famous eggnog, after which we caught some of the Golden State vs Cavaliers NBA match, and had a short kip.
Christmas dinner exceeded expectations. There was copious amounts of turkey with cranberry sauce and gravy, bacon brussels sprouts, mashed taters, homemade stuffing, and apple pie, washed down with a range of drinks - eggnog, punch, red wine, icewine, white wine! After such a feast, it is fair to say we slept pretty well.
