After those two long and tiring days of travel, on Wednesday we finished our Quinnipiac UCC Orientation with a scavenger hunt in the city. We all gathered outside Farranlea and walked in together. The walk into the city is about 25 minutes, which now seems easy, but once again at the time seemed never ending. The scavenger hunt consisted of finding certain stores and embarrassing ourselves asking locals where to go. We took many selfies in front of stores and restaurants, which some locals actually joined in on. It was definitely a good/fun way to learn the city. It made finding Tesco for our first official grocery shopping trip a little easier. When we returned back to Farranlea and recovering from the walk, we started to cook our first meal. Even though it was just pasta and salad, we were still pretty proud of ourselves.
Thursday, we began our UCC orientation. The first day of UCC orientation consisted of us sitting in a lecture hall for what felt like hours on end listening to multiple different speakers. Needless to say, it was a lot of information to take in. After we left, we made dinner and then started getting ready for our first night out. Finding outfits to wear out has been a constant struggle since we got here because they dress SO much nicer than we do to go out. Most of the "going out" clothes that I brought here I can't wear. But we all managed to put together outfits and make it out to the bar. We went to the Washington Inn, which is referred to as "the wash." I had my first Guinness, which I learned I actually like! I also learned that the Irish (or at least the Irish that spend their time in the wash) LOVE jager bombs. We spent our night dancing all over the wash. And when I say all over, I mean on the floor, in the bathroom, on the chairs, on the tables, and on the bar. So basically everywhere. It was a good way to kick off our Irish adventure.
Friday we continued our UCC orientation with a tour of campus. We met our peer support leaders, which made me realized even more how terrible I am at understanding people's accents. Even now two weeks in I'm still pretty bad at it. Luckily, none of my professors have very thick accents. Later that night we had dinner with the entire QU group at a really good restaurant called Amicus. I got steak with mashed potatoes (one of my personal favorites). At dinner, Sarah, Kaitlyn, and I sat next to Mary (our "house mother"). She is such a chatty and sweet person. She suggested a restaurant for us called Jackie Lennox, which we actually ended up going to! We finished off the dinner with some warm chocolate cake, which at that point I couldn't even eat because I was so full from the steak. After we left the restaurant Sarah, Caroline, Sara, and I explored through the city a bit and rode a ferris wheel in the city. The view from the top of the ferris wheel was beautiful. After we got down from the ferris wheel on our walk back we stopped in at a pub called The Bailey. I tried my first Bulmers(delicious by the way). It was a beautiful night to walk around the city and experience it for the first time at night.
