So the first night on the bus was difficult, getting used to sleeping in a choice of two 'puppy' piles or two coffin cabs or be a baguette in a vehicle that is hurtling along freeways that seem to have been made with lumpy porridge. I think my subconscious had shielded me from the reality of sleeping in a bus with thirty strangers....I sadly miss this shield. Bus breaks you slide down the bus like a bar of soap or you move you find you've acquired an extra body part.
Waking up to see rain real rain I thought I knew rain, being from England and Manchester (a stereotype that I would strongly argue with) you'd think I'd know rain but nope this was the big daddy of rain! Yes a travel blog entry on rain...I am English lol
So we rolled through Denver with its huge shipping yards and amazing roads spring from water and swaggered into Washington, THE Washington. West Wing fans you will not be disappointed. Note: Maps are deceptive little mares, oh it's only a block away...it doesn't reveal that that block is actually ridiculously big. I strongly recommend not only wearing comfy shoes but packing an extra pair of feet, I came with the idea that I'd get fitter what with all the walking and inflicted vegetarian diet (thank god for the city breaks for meat fixes) I didn't count on being two foot shorter with calves of steel.
But I digress, so we roll into Washington in our pj's and I'm thinking they have some out of the way parking facility for the 'miracle' to happen and for us to get change...new level of mortification coming up...we roll into a bus station...I kid you not a bus station a bus station with fresh faced and perfectly preened people coming into the capital for a days graft or moseying...we are forced off the bus in our pjs, bed hair and last nights make up 'artistically' smeared to stand in the bus station and eat our crossaint. In Washington getting changed in the toilets is illegal ...back on the bus and back in time to high school with the awkward changing sessions before PE...and all before coffee and breakfast.
Decided to head into the Native American museum, wish I could have packed Grandad C as it was beautiful, its not like a museum for a european subject so there is not masses of artefacts but it's more quality over quantity. I have to say its making me really excited to meet the tribes. The food court was AMAZING!!! The best dishes from a territory and every territory and by god it all looked divine some presented in the traditional way others with a bit of a modern spin. Buffalo, duck, turkey, elk and meat sweats for me!
So we stomped round the capital saw all the usuals, sadly the cenotaph was under scaffolding but it was still amazing! Tipped my hat to a freshly washed Lincoln and skipped across to Arlington Cemetery....the only cemetery where the dead have there own metro station :)
I think I have drank more water today then in the entire time before this trip!
