We had an early start to get to Lattikai. We were going by train and the train options were 6:00 am express or 6:45 am local. We opted for the 6:45 local. The train journey was supposed to be through beautiful scenery. The 1st part of it was distinctively unimpressive - through plains and fields. It went slowly as the track was under repair in a lot of places. Fran went to sleep but woke up when we went through the mountains. Thee scenery improved dramatically here. We eventually arrived about 30 minutes late.
We had not booked a hotel in Lattikia as all options seemed poor. We hailed a taxi and had the driver take us to a couple of hotels. We ended up at a resort 6km outside of town. The hotel was enormous (600+ rooms) and government owned with lots of marble but seemed very badly run. Reception wasn't interested in us and managed to show us a room with an uncleaned toilet. Still the standard of the room was good so we decided to stay and have a day on the beach. (Mediterranean Sea) The beach was good but weird as there was just the beach and no other facilities offered by the hotel.
Went into town later to eat. It is a large port and quite lively . There were lots of western style shops & cafes . The people were also quite westernised - very few women in headscarves. The place was ruined however by the large port buildings cutting the town off from the coast.
