Dear all,
We arrived safely at Cascavel this morning after taking a domestic flight from Gru airport São Paulo. It was a little prop plane only carrying 72 people and flight time was just under two hours. Gisela and Manoel were there to meet us and it was a happy reunion!
From there, instead of heading straight to the farm as originally planned, we headed straight for Iguacu Foz where we are staying at the Ibis hotel. Sam had seen a sign labelled Itaipu and had asked if it was connected to the famous dam. lol and behold it was and we spent a lovely afternoon exploring the mechanics of it. Somehow, we don't know how but Gisela managed to get us both onto the extended tour where you get to visit the dam and go inside to see how parts of it work.
We were the only English people on this tour but the guides included us which was great and translated everything. When we went inside the dam, one of the guides took us on a personal tour as he could speak very good English. We got to ask lots of questions and see things that other people didn't see! The tour also included visiting the Paraguay side so have been in two countries today!
This tour took over two hours and was worth it, we would recommend this tour to everyone! We were also surprised to learn that there is vey little mentioned about it in our Brazil book.
After that we headed back to our hotel and had a small tea which was nice after our huge all you can eat buffet lunch.
Although it is only 20.23 now we are both sooooooo tired and hope to sleep well.
Tomorrow we are up sharp, again!
We are headed straight to Iguacu falls and will be visiting the Argentinian side too. I believe we will be taken on a boat trip to get nearer to the falls so plastic macs at the ready!
Anyway I shall stop here as my eyes are well and truly closing.
Love to you all and update you again soon,
Donna xxxx

Sam Dear Mr Dorling and Mr Kindersley I am writing to ask why you consider the Itaipu Dam- the second biggest hydroelectric dam in the world and in terms of power per cubic metre of water the best- worthy of but half a sentence in your Brazil guide book. And this is only when explaining why the nearby city Foz do Iguazu experienced a population surge from the 1970s. The dam is a most incredible feat of engineering and is a tourist hotspot- guided tours of the dam are a must. However this is no thanks to your guidebook which doesn't even mention it! We are just lucky that I came across a list of mega-dams on Facebook a few months ago, read about the Itaipu, and then happened to remember it when I saw a road sign to Itaipu the other day. And after I had to phone up Amazon in desperation to get your book delivered in time before we left. Don't know why I bothered. Yours Sam Oliver
