Yesterday we went on a walking tour of Bur Dubai, the old part of Dubai on the opposite side of the creek to where we walked on Tuesday. We caught the metro to al-Fahidi station then walked down to the creek to walk through the Bastakia Quarter which was full of restored old buildings from the 1860's. We walked through the maze alleyways between the old buildings until we reached the Dubai Museum which is inside the old al-Fahidi fort which is one of the oldest buildings in Dubai. Before we went into the museum S wanted to look inside a silk shop which was a wholesale place made up of lots of small shops so you got harassed by sales staff as you wandered around. One guy was particularly good bailing S up for 20 minutes or so and dabbing us with various oil-based colognes which meant we reeked of cologne for the rest of the day.
The museum was interesting with the fort itself and then displays on the history of Dubai and the people who lived there before oil was discovered and the ex-pat labourers moved in. Most of the museum was air-conditioned which was a welcome relief from the heat outside. 38 degrees and a cloudless sky again. Same as the day before and the day before that. After the museum we had a rest and a drink at a shop across the road from the museum then walked on past the Grand Mosque and through an area known as Hindi Lane which is home of the original Indian community in Dubai.
We continued on to the Bur Dubai souk which was a covered street with mostly souvenir shops and tailors so again it was running the gauntlet of sales people trying to drag you into their shop and buy something. After successfully negotiating the souk we walked along the waterfront which had a nice cool breeze to the Shindagha Heritage area which had the old houses of Sheikhs plus museums on pearl diving among other things. From here we had hoped to catch a water taxi down the creek and then get the metro back to the hotel. We waited for 20 minutes or so with no sign of a boat so walked back to the nearest metro station and caught the metro back to the shopping centre near the hotel for an ice-cream from Cold Stone Creamery then back to the hotel for a rest before heading out to dinner.
