Two Girls... One World
Hello everybody from very chilly South Island, New Zealand!
We arrived here on Tuesday and picked up our campervan (named Elizabus... or Lizzie for short as she looks like a bus and has Lizards painted on her!)
Since we've been here we've been doing some shopping for warm clothes (essential) and slippers, and Ugg boots and food to stock up Lizzie's cupboards. We've also been doing a bit too much sleeping - twelve hours a night, but I guess we need it... catching up for all those sleepless dorm nights in Oz!
We have been to Christchurch Cathedral - very pretty and a very friendly place with interesting artefacts and a history section about the Cathedral. There was a stunning alter cloth in there which had been recently finished, but was only on display as some individuals in the diocese didnt agree with the words to one of the prayers on it... We left a comment in the visitors book saying how beautiful it was - someone's put all that hard work in and they're not even going to use it!
We also visited the International Antarctic Centre, which is a working centre near the airport from which most expeditions to the frozen continent take place. The highlight was a snow room full of real snow, an igloo, sledge, tent and ice slide. It was anything from -5 to -21 in there at different times! Luckily we were wrapped up! Every hour it turns into a storm simulator and there are strong winds blowing through and the temperature drops - we took shelter in the igloo for a bit before braving the storm!
We're planning on leaving ChCh tomorrow (depending on what time we wake up!) and heading for Akaroa - a little French colonial town about an hour south. After that we're going to investigate the hot springs, and mountain areas before heading north.
CU soon!
Love Karen and Fleur xxxxxxx
