New York, New York!! Laura's American Adventure...
Well hello again!
Yes I made it here to the big city safe and in one piece! I am loving it here but before I tell you all about it I will fill you in on my last few days at camp.....
The last week with the girls was really fun. We had a trip to a Funfair which looked just like the scene at the end of the film Grease. It was so cheesy but fun and I got to eat deep fried Oreo's which is always a good idea before going on a ride that throws you around and looks like its about to break!? But despite that the Oreo's were yummy!
We also had a big activity on camp called Gold Rush where the whole camp was made to look like something out of a Western and some staff dressed up and played characters. There were villians and sheriffs, a jail and lots of gold for the kids to find and buy treats. It was a fun day!
The performance of Grease went really well and most of them remembered my dance moves which was cool. I was a little disappointed however not to get any credit for being the choreographer when there were no other dance numbers in the whole show except the ones I did!!! Ooops, sorry I know, it's all about the kids...... he he!
On Tuesday night we had our Banquet night which was really good. It was a night at the Oscars theme. We got all dressed up, ate really good food and they had an awards ceremony. It was a good night. I got the award for most caring counselor(?) apparently for looking after my co-counselor Charlie though, not the kids. :)
The kids all left to go home on Wednesday morning. Just as I thought I was getting rid of them I was asked to take a bus to New York with half of them to supervise. Grr! In the end though it turned out well. We got to stay in a hotel, get some nice meals, have a few drinks at the hotel, watch some films and get some much needed sleep on the bus! So it wasn't all bad.
It was quite sad to see the girls go in the end, despite them making me want to strangle them for the past month!
When we got back to camp it was sooooo quiet though it was spooky!
So the last few days were just cleaning up and having lots of drunken nights out with all the staff. We had to bid Lake Placid goodbye of course! (Don't worry Mum, no jumping in the lake this time!)
We had our final evaluation thing and mine was really good. Infact it went along the lines of me being the most responsible and professional counselor.... oooh get me! Not to forget, 'a superb dancer'! :) So I was pleased with that. We also got paid our measly wage and were told if we were to come back next year we will earn approx $2000 more!!!! I need that now! I don't think I'll go back though, despite the tempting money offer.
So on Monday we travelled here to New York City and arrived at our hostel at about 6pm. The hostel is really nice, alot better than I expected. That night we went for a wander around Times Square, WOW! You really can't belive how big and crazy this place is til you see it. Can I stay here??? I absolutely love it!
Today has been busy. We had a lie-in and left the hostel around 12pm and I have only just got back in around 1am. We went on a sight-seeing tour bus (which we have passes on for 2 days) and did the touristy thing. We need to go again tomorrow as we didn't get off at the Empire State or Statue of Liberty today. We did get off at Ground Zero though and had abit of a depressing hour. It was so sad walking through the church next door and reading all the messages and accounts of what happened. The actual site is just a huge building site now and it's hard to imagine what happened there. It was all very sad.
Next we went back to Times Square to try getting some theatre tickets. (Oh, we saw the naked cowboy by the way!) They had no tickets for Wicked which I had my heart set on so a few of us went off to the theatre box office. They do a really cool thing here with most shows where everyday at a certain time they hold a raffle and give away 20 pairs of tickets for $25. Loads of people line up and sign their names then they call the lucky winners. We gave it a try but unfortunately didn't win. :( We were desperate though so then queued up for cancellations and in the end we were lucky and the 3 of us got tickets!! We were so excited! Our seats were 5 rows from the front too!
So tonight I have been to see Wicked. Oh My God!!! It is so amazing! Words cannot describe it. Anyone who gets the chance in England go to see it because it's so good and it totally changes your view on the Wizard of Oz story!!! It's the best musical in the world....ever! :)
The other girls all went to see something else, I don't know what as I havn't seen them yet. Maybe Chicago because Usher is starring in it here. You can't get near the theatre for all the press.
I have had such a good day though!
Plans for tomorrow are more sight seeing and lazing in central park, gotta try not to shop!
Sorry, this is so long, I had so much to tell you! I should go to bed now as it's 1.15am and I need my sleep.
I hope all is well at home and you can live without me coz I'm never coming home!!!!! :)
Night Night xxxx
