Today I was reading my philosophy book “50 Philosophy Ideas” by Ben Dupré. Section 43, entitled “Faith and Reason”, started with “In spite of some heroic attempts to revive them, most philosophers would agree that the traditional arguments for the existence of God are effectively beyond resuscitation”. “Encouraging”, I thought. But, it was immediately followed by “Most religious believers would, however, be untroubled by this conclusion. Their belief does not depend on such arguments and would certainly not be shaken by their refutation”. So, why, I thought, does humanity continue this debate, when it appears an exercise in futility? Later on that night, I watched numerous TV programmes on You Tube where various groups continued that exercise in futility, as they debated away the same subject. This screen shot is from one such programme, which happens to be one of Nicky Campbell’s “Big Questions” episodes, the big question being: “Is it time for all religions to accept evolution?” The two people to the right of the screen shot are Professor Steve Jones, eminent biologist, fellow of the Royal Society and, until recently, Head of the Department of Genetics, Evolution and Environment at University College London, and, to his left is Matt Ridley, an Oxford Phd author of various popular science books, including an award winning work on the Genome Project. By the time I took this shot, the summary evidence had been presented, and a logical Q & A trail had led people into a corner of irrefutable conclusion, i.e. that creationism was a nonsense, and to re-use the phrase, it was beyond resuscitation. Of course, when it came to it, rationality and logic got nowhere. The bible was true, because the bible said it was true. Faith trumps fact, any time, any day. And, of course, the rationalists lost the battle, or the skirmish, and Jones and Ridley’s expressions said it all.
