An album I dearly loved from the early 70’s was “Man Opening Umbrellas Ahead” by the late great Vivian Stanshall (formerly of the Bonzo Dog DooDah Band). When I spied this shot, one of my favourite songs from the album “Bout of Sobriety” immediately came to mind. To be fair to the subject of the picture, the only reference in the song which might apply, relates to those slightly obvious nicotine deposits at the end of the two fingers, and, I must say, I’m really making no judgement about bad habits, since, as a free-will denier and a determinist, I know that judging anyone’s behaviour is folly, as no-one is really responsible for who they are, or what they get into – in any event, what does it matter? However, here’s a couple of verses from the song – to me, even in its rawness, it remains poetry: “With a little red wine beneath my belt / I breathe breath that can melt the paint off doors / A tongue to strip the polish off those parquet floors / Wake up in the morning with a concertina cough / My coke-encrusted lungs a'fluttering like a pigeon loft / Brown-top-fingers fumble for the first days fag / Stick it in my face and (Cough) What a drag”...mmm...good ole Vivian. Sadly, Vivian Stanshall died as a result a fire at his flat in London. The suspected cause was a cigarette after Stanshall had fallen asleep.
