Moss, that great symbol of longevity and permanence (often celebrated by the Japanese) adorns the numerous dry stone walls of the area.

I once collaborated with a Czech scientist called Jindrich Kazda, who was interested in tuberculosis type bacteria which live in moss (we even recorded a new one in the literature called Mycobacterium hiberniae).. On one of his days off on field work on Co Clare, he went with the MSc student to visit the Aliwee Caves and fell behind the rest of the group. The guide went back, to find him staring intently at a spot high on the cave wall. 'Is everything OK?' 'Oh yes, I am just looking for Moses' was what the guide heard by way of response. The MSc student stepped in and saved the day.
