After a memorable journey from Thaket to Pakse, being chased by the tuk-tuk driver and empty knife threats by the crazy guy with a gammy eye (all for 10,000kip), followed by our student dinner of one beer and a packet of crisps shared on top of the bridge, we are ready to have some fun!
We rent motorbikes and set off on a small loop around the Bolaven Plateau. It's my first time riding a motorbike (for more than 20 seconds) and I love it! Driving is much better than riding on the back and don't know why I haven't done it sooner. We only have a 100cc bike and with two of us on the bike it's hard to get past 80Km/hr. The waterfalls on the first day are just what we need to forget about the guy with the gammy eye in and all of the night before.
The first fall- Tat Etu - is absolutely stunning, possibly the best waterfall I have ever seen as it is completely untouched. A natural playground all for ourselves, and we make the most of it! We clamber up the rocks, take photos behind the fall and spend the afternoon messing around. We stay for a few hours and truly enjoy the tranquillity. The next stop is at Tat Fan, only 1 Km away and at 120m it is even more stunning in a totally different way. The water plummets from a dense lined jungle Plateau, evaporating into the atmosphere as it falls. At the last waterfall- Tat Champe - we are Jamey and make it in after hours so we end up having the place to ourselves again. A bamboo raft crosses the waterfall so we pull ourselves under the tat for an intense natural shower. Everyone ends up in the water at some point and later we find a massive family room to be for the night. What an absolutely brilliant day of waterfall hopping! The next day Thibault leaves us for a longer excursion to a lake close to the Vietnamese boarder, as he sleeps under the stars watching out for tigers we cruise on to Tat Lo.
