After finally arriving at the villa and trying to catch a small nap we headed back into Volterra to where we were told was the nearest market.
We had NO idea where we were going but stopped at the sign that said COOP. No one spoke any English, and we were told emphatically "NO Eglaise!"
Things we learned: The markets close at 7:00 pm. Orange juice is carbonated. Water is carbonated unless you ask for "stilli" which means non-carbonated. Peanut butter is no where to be found. Milk is not refrigerated. But the cheeses and wines are plentiful and delicious.
After finding a few things for the villa, we headed out to try and find a restaurant to have dinner. At that point we learned that the small restaurants in Volterra also close early. So we headed back toward the villa because Alicia said she saw a sign for a "menu."
It was the most beautiful little spot! The sign said "Agriturisimo." There were no cars but we drove down the driveway with the intention of turning around when a young lady pulled up behind us. When we asked if they were open she said, "Si, come in. I will fix you something to eat!" It was wonderful. We had pasta and vegetarian lasagna and antipasti and wine. And to top it off... delicious chocolate gellati.
We did sleep well that night!

Betsy Fab, sounds like you experienced other characteristics of Italianism that we also hear about this side of the pond, i.e. hospitality, great food, encouragement to mangia, mangia!
