After heading South for Christmas, our journey took us back the way we came to head on to Myanmar. This meant taking an overnight train back to Bangkok followed by a night bus the next day, so we had a bit of time to rest in the city.
While here we reflected on our time in Thailand, vocalising my concerns that we had only seen the tourist hotspots and not really experienced authentic Thai culture. Most people we met were kind and shy, rarely offered an opinion but always welcoming. I feared that we had only met people putting on a polite front for international visitors, but Lucy challenged my pessimism. What if I was looking for something more open, more like my own culture and just coming up with explanations to justify this difference? What if this was Thai culture, a more restrained, private lifestyle with a deeply held belief of giving honour?
On our bus journey to the Myanmar border we got little sleep. A stop for dinner was scheduled at midnight, just 4 hours before we reached our destination, suffice to say we haven't eaten this late since our heady student days! We then had to get a tuk-tuk to the border and wait until 6 AM for it to open up. The crossing itself was simple and pleasant, with a walk across a bridge in no-man's land being particularly good.
