It's viet freakin nammmmmmmm!!!!
Been pretty poor on the old blog front recently and now we are on out way to Sri Lanka via Bangkok ( and fitness first, free pass, more on that later ;)). I thought I'd write a little about our trip to the Mekong Delta in Vietnam.
We haven't booked that many tours and so when we do, ooohhhhh, we don't do it cheap!
Run by Smile Tourist, John, Nicci (by the way, johns friend from home has joined us to travel through nam, Nicola, Nicci or elf) we paid $125 for a 2 day tour with homestay on the Mekong Delta.
Leaving HCMC at 8am we travelled by taxi to the Mekong. It's safe to safe that if you are travel sick, then sure don't visit Vietnam. I would rather be on a bike than in a car in this country.cars are so outnumbered, wagons just float into any lane they fancy, and taxi drivers try to kill you a good 5 times an hour!!!! That's free though!
Arriving at the Mekong we took a boat ride to an island where we ate fresh fruit and enjoyed music entertainment from the locals. Some traditional then randomly the "if your happy and you know it stomp your feet" vietnamese classic.
After our fruit brekkie we travelled down the Mekong in a little wooden boat! We all wore a conical hat, which I have to say, will most def be in vogue spring/summer collection 2013....aha girlfriend, you bet'cha!!!
We then visited a coconut sweet making factory. Actual women sat there individual wrapping the 2inch coconut pieces of heaven, they were like lightening. Speedy finger wrapping family there.
On our way to lunch we enjoyed a horse and rather unsteady coach ride, but we made it to lunch. The photo to this blog was our lunch, watered down with a Saigon beer.
After lunch we made our way to our homestay. Amazing place, fruit growing everywhere. Ponds with little wooden bridges to walk over, randomly a crocodile as well, just there, in the middle of the homestay, in a pit!!!
We decided to explore the Mekong ourselves. With 2hrs before tea, we had plenty of time. However, 2 and a half hours later we are totally lost, having walked miles. We had to take refuge in a boutique hotel while the luvly owner called our tour company, and they called our guide. In hindsight, we should def have at least taken the name of the homestay, but we didn't. Cavalry arrived in the shape of 3 motor bikes to drive us back home!!! Totally felt like naughty school children!!! Any excuse to get back on a bike!
