I made it to Spain safely! YAY! I am going to write another blog post about how everything has been going soon. But first, I just need to get this off my chest:
Since I had to sit in the second to last row of the plane, the trip was not the smoothest. I wanted to sleep to try and get on track because the flight was during the middle of the night in Spain. I think I got a maximum of one hour of sleep on the flight. I landed at 9 am local Spain time, so I had a full day ahead of me. I expected to be way more tired in the afternoon, but I think I was on such an adrenaline high that I felt even more hyper than I usually am. Given that I was meeting a bunch of new people in a new city, the all day adrenaline rush made total sense. Plus, I was in a city where everyone speaks in Spanish and where I am expected to speak in Spanish as well. This concept is so exciting to me because Spanish is one of my majors and I love the language so much. Each time I heard someone speaking in Spanish yesterday, it felt like my heart pumped a little bit faster (which was like, most of the time...) I need a chill pill! (Melatonin please)
For the next two weeks, I am residing in Residencia Galdós, a dorm for UCM's campus. Everyone in my program is living here as well, which gives us time to find places to live. It's also very convenient and a great way to meet people. I already know where I am living because I decided that I am going to do a homestay, which I will definitely talk about in later posts. But I am very, VERY grateful that we have this time to settle in. It's also almost as nice as a hotel, to be honest.
Back to talking about jet lag, I was hoping that since I was running on only one hour of sleep, I would fall asleep just fine. While that was the case, I woke up at midnight and then again at maybe 4:30 or 5 am. Did I go back to bed before our morning call at 9 am? NO! I also get pretty stressed when I can't fall asleep, so that doesn't help. I did fall asleep at 10 pm though, so I guess that was an improvement.
I expected to be fatigued today. I'm not too tired, I just have a headache. I know all of this is normal, especially traveling from west to east. But my roommate, Shiri, has napped a few times since we got here and STILL got a full night's sleep. She's actually napping as I'm writing this!!! So, yes, I do envy Shiri's sleeping abilities right now.
And did you think I was going to get through my first day in Madrid without having café con leche? You bet I had some! Looking back, that probably didn't help control my adrenaline....
Oh well! Haha..I'll write all about my first days in Spain once I get some good rest. Adiós!
