Wow woken up by the alarm going off at 6.30am this morning, switched it off, turned over and went back to sleep. Actually got up about 9am, much more civilised. Weather looks okay today although not as sunny and warm as it has been recently. Just waiting for Anne to finish tarting herself up then we can go for breakfast, it's included in the price here!!!
Having returned from breakfast the weather has taken a turn for the worst and looks like it is set in to rain all day, bit of a number but can't do anything about it, just make the best of a bad job.
Off first of all to see the local lighthouse which is now manned by the Coastguard. It was a bit boring, nothing exciting and it's placed off the beach, strange given where our lighthouses tend to be placed. Anyway while we were parked up it gave us the chance to bin all the rubbish that had accumulated in the car over the last ten days or so, water bottles, sweet wrappers, empty crisp packets etc. I've tried to tell Anne that eating all that stuff is bad for her but she takes no notice, women!!
So now we have made a decision that we will go to a place called Provincetown, no idea what's there but it's got to be worth a look as it's at the end of the peninsula as far as you can go without getting your feet wet.
The journey should have been easy and in fact it was as we followed the signs to Provincetown, well you would I hear you say but over here things aren't usually sign posted you travel in a compass direction to your destination. On Cape Cod though that seems a little difficult as Provincetown is the furthest North you can go on Cape Cod but the road that takes you there is the 6 South!! That really upset Anne she couldn't work it out for the life of her (neither could I to be fair) and she dulled about it all the way there. Anyway after what seemed a long journey that took about an hour we arrived and managed to find a paying car park near the town centre. Now it cost $6 for two hours and $2 per hour or part hour there after. Very unusual to pay for parking here, a bit like in France.
Having left the car and donned our coats as it was still raining although the temperature was mid 70's and humidity about 90 per cent. I think I was wetter with my cost on than I would have been without it!! Not nice I know but true, I do have a tendency to sweat.
So off we went into town little suspecting what we were about to discover! There were no warning signs on the approach to the town, nothing on the radio stations, nothing, just nothing. You enter the place in blissful ignorance. Initially there are just subtle signs, a preponderance of same sex couples wandering together, then things became more obvious, a shop called 'slap the monkey', another shop selling leather goods of the kind not generally worn in public and if worn in private only by those of a certain persuasion. Then of course there was the shop with a window display that should certainly have had a triple X certificate as it had fully on display and as clear as clear can be items for use almost exclusively by women that buzz and vibrate in order for them ( women) to achieve a certain level of pleasure. They were just there in the window, several of them in some lovely pastel colours, different shapes and sizes for anyone to see! This is on the main street where there were some children, okay I agree not many but some. I was amazed and to a certain degree shocked. Anne just giggled and thought it was funny!! Then to cap it all we went into a coffee/cake/ice cream parlour for a pastry and coffee. Not a place that would hold any surprises I hear you say, well how wrong can you be?? The place sold candy genitalia of both kinds and again in a variety of sizes and shapes. They were obviously lolly like items to lick but ... no I'm not going there. I will leave the rest to your imagination but suffice to say once more the place was frequented by families and children, how do they get away with it?
As you may have guessed by now the place was an enigma. On one hand it looked like a cross between Blackpool and Whitby and on the other it was doing a great impression of Soho and Amsterdam on steroids!! There were pictures all over advertising various 'shows' men dressed as women, women as men, gay men and women, you name it they had it going on. Needless to say I kept tight hold of Anne as I didn't want any mistakes being made!
As we were making our way back towards the car along the main street we noticed two elderly women strolling down the centre of the road ( and I do mean strolling) with a line of traffic following them. They were totally oblivious to the chaos they were causing, I had to stop Anne saying anything to them as I wanted to see what would happen, nothing did. They continued for at least 100yards before they reached a major crossroads at the centre of town and blithely wandered out into the centre of that before slowly crossing the whole junction and mounting the footpath at the other side. Not once did they even appear to notice there were cars all around and to be fair not one of the motorist sounded their car horn. It was a very strange thing to witness.
After about three hours we could take no more and we left to visit another lighthouse on the way home. This one was even further back from the sea in fact it was so far back from the sea you could only see the sea by climbing to the top if it. Very weird position to have placed it even taking into account that it had been moved there to take into account the erosion of the cliff. I reckon it should be okay in it's present position for at least the next 1000 years!!
Somehow the drive home only took about 30 minutes, we did take a slightly different route but not that much we thought. Anyway we got home almost before we'd set off back, very peculiar.
It has rained the whole day but we have been and done, seen things, certainly seen things and all in all it's been a good day.
This evenings meal was again taken at the Tavern and was again fine with Anne have an excess of chocolate for her sweet. I can't believe how unhealthily she has eaten this holiday. Major diet for us both when we get home!! Whilst having dinner there was on the table behind us five women ( no men). Soon after our arrival they had finished and the waitress brought the bill over, well what happened next was so typical of women. Firstly one of them had a gift card so she gave that to the waitress and told her to use what ever was on the card and subtract it from the bill, this was obviously done and the waitress returned with the new amount to be paid. They then all started to work out what each of them had eaten and the cost to each of them then, and this I'd never seen before, they each put a credit card in the little holder with the bill, called the waitress over and told her they each wanted to pay separately, so she went away and eventually returned with five separate bills, one each. It is only something that could happen with a group of women, it never happens with groups of blokes!!
Apart from that it was basically uneventful and the meal as I said earlier was nice.
Back at the 'cottage' now and bed beckons. It's been a long day again and another one tomorrow looms as we are off to Plimoth Plantation to experience life as the Pilgrims did who landed from the Mayflower. So good night all, sleep tight and I'll be back with another install entry tomorrow.
