I have been here at Yulara for 2 days of a 3 day stay.
I have learnt that:-
Yulara is the Ayres Rock Resort
Uluru is Ayres Rock
Kata Tjuta is The Olgas
On the way to Yulara i slept at a few roadside overnight stops, these are very popular with us grey nomad travellers, they also provide an opportunity to meet some interesting people and get tips for the road. The roadside overnight stops are well equipped for van travelers, many have water and toilet facilities.
One of these nights I spent a pleasant camp fire evening with a dad and daughter, the daughter Bec, a school teacher from Sydney was doing a 40 k run per day from Darwin to Adelaide raising money for story books for outback aboriginal children. She was soaking her feet in a betadine bath.
A particular feature of sitting around this camp fire was the company of many field mice. 100 s of them, I wrapped the end of my jeans in my socks so they would not run up my leg. I have never seen so many. Bec slept in the car that night as they had been running under the floor of her tent the night before and she had had enough. Thankfully my Van is all sealed.
Visiting the road houses today I feel sorry for the workers as they are loosing a battle with the plague of mice. One road house I saw three mice running across the floor in a couple of seconds I was there.. Another roadhouse had a distinctly strong smell. I concluded it came from rotting mice, there was no way you could buy anything or eat there. The poor lady serving said she had run out of strategies, energy and patience in getting rid of the mice. She was sprinkling napthalene flakes around at night and then sweeping up the dead mice in the morning. My thinking is that she is missing a few of the dead ones.
Back to Yulara
The camping ground is in the Yulara Resort so all very up market as is everything here at the Resort.
The Vans line up all day waiting to get in, most folk stay 2 or 3 days. At 3pm today I heard there were no powered sites left.
Seeing "The Rock" at sunset and sunrise is awesome. The colour changes all the time. I will let my photos tell the story. Tomorrow I plan to visit the Olgas a group of domed rocks about 35Km away, these domes are higher than Ayres Rock. I feel very privileged to have this opportunity to see some of Australia's nature at its best.
