We had planned to spend Andrews birthday on the beach, relaxing in the sun, listening to the calming sound of the waves….well that only happened for about an hour. It was cloudy and rainy the rest of our time spent in this lively little seaside town which is only a 40min train ride outside of Lisbon. But we tried to make the most of it and actually liked the town itself very much. It's filled with a happy abundance of cafes, bars, and restaurants which add to the welcoming atmosphere. We stayed at a lovely Portuguese families home through AirBnB which was a 5 min walk to everything. We had our own private area in their attic with a bedroom, bathroom and living room that we had to access through the kitchen (which we made great use of). We started buying groceries from the local markets since that's the cheapest way to eat. Our host Joao-"John" gave us a tour around town in his car, pointing out things to see and do. After the tour we walked to the sandy bay and got to have the beach experience I mentioned earlier. It was nice while it lasted- but no worries- we know we'll have plenty of great beach days coming up in our future in Australia ;) The highlight of the next day was our free bike rental in torrential rain… Of course the downpour started just as we hop on the bikes. But it didn't stop us and we got to ride the whole 9km strip which runs along the water. We had a delicious meal the night of Andrews' birthday and got to try the well known Portuguese cod dishes. But first we shared mussels as an appetizer and let me just say they were the biggest ones I've ever had! After dinner we got gelato from a place in town that Joao recommended and sat by the water enjoying the view. All in all we had a very nice time and got to relax and enjoy everything Cascais had to offer….even if the sun or beaches weren't a part of it. Had they been we definitely would have stayed a little longer. It's definitely worth a trip from Lisbon.
