Saz's Canadian Odyssey
Yes so I haven't written in a little while, just haven't had internet around really and been a bit lazy! Am now in Jordan but will update from the desert last week.
Went on a trip into the desert from Bahariya Oasis with a Korean-American brother and sister who were great company. We drove through the most amazing landscapes, the Black Desert and then the White Desert with incredible white rocky outcrops which at sunset looked like meringues! We had a fire with seriously good bbq chicken and then slept in an open air tent looking at the stars. The silence was incredible and the number of stars above us just amazing. With no light pollution whatsover, it really is an awesome sight.
We headed back to the oasis the next morning and took the 3 o'clock bus back to Cairo. I think another bus must have broken down as there were 2 busloads of people on there! Bit of a squash for 5 hours but being foreigners, we all got seats!
I decided I didn't need or want to stay in Cairo so went straight to the bus station and bought a ticket to Nuweiba which is the crossing point over to Jordan and in fact only an hour's drive north of Dahab. It was a very long and cold 9 hour night bus and I was truly knackered when I got there. Went straight to the Soft Beach Camp, got myself a hut and slept till it got too hot. Then spent the next 2 days lying in the sun reading. It was fab! It was so nice just to relax for a while and do nothing. The setting was beautiful - see the photos - with hardly anyone there and a gorgeous sandy beach. I hung out with G (Norway), Cameron (Oz) and 2 Israeli boys which was fun. So it was a great chilled couple of days much needed!
Yesterday, Cameron and I ventured away from paradise to take the ferry over to Aqaba, Jordan and in all my travelling, I have never spent so long travelling only a few kms! We got to the port at 10.30am and arrived at Aqaba at midnight! It was just unbelieveable. The ferry was supposed to be at 2pm but eventually left at 7.30pm. Then at the other end, we had to wait at least an hour on the ferry before we were allowed off, then another half an hour waiting to get out passports back. It really was a shambles and i've never waited for anything for so long!! When we finally got to Aqaba we were starving - I love that restuarants/cafes etc are open so late here! - and so tired. I slept like a log!
Anyway, we both left this morning - Cameron for Wadi Rum and me for Petra. I am very excited about going to Petra in the morning and will probably spend 3 days here. Already I really like Jordan. Everyone is very friendly and i've hardly been hassled at all. Was very strange on the way here to Petra. After 6 weeks in Egypt with horrendous driving, I never saw a single accident. But on my first day in Jordan where their driving appears to be slightly better, saw an accident with car on its side, injured people etc. Very strange!
So will write again in a few days and probably bore everyone senseless raving on about Petra!!
