Saz's Canadian Odyssey
Hi all,
Yes, I actually made it! After a delayed flight at Heathrow, I thought I would miss my connection in Madrid. Fortunately, some helpful BA staff were there to run us to our departure gate in time. In fact, the plane waited for several delayed flights so ended up leaving Madrid about an hour later than planned. The Iberia flight was as expected really and we cruised in over the Andes at about 8.30am. Unfortunately it turned out that Iberia hadn't managed to put my bag on board, even with all the extra time they had. So, I arrived at La Casa Roja with pretty much nothing! Even worse since UK customs wouldn't let me take anything such as showergel, toothpaste etc etc on the plane so I was pretty stuck. Anyway, the lovely auzzie girl who runs the place gave me some shampoo etc so I could at least be a bit cleaner. Bag has just turned up so I can now change my socks!! Hooray! Unfortunately this meant that i couldn't head up the mountain today as planned so am on the list for tomorrow.
So yesterday I went for a wander around Santiago which was suprisingly hot! Very strange when the snow capped Andes are overlooking (and teasing I might add!!). Went up a hill in a funi and cable car and had amazing views of the city and mountains. Very smoggy city which gave the snow a wierd orangy tinge. Took lots of pictures which i'll probably put on tomorrow. Had a look round the market too. I quite enjoy blending in a bit more here than I ever did in Asia, its impossible there obviously! People actually think i'm Spanish (until I open my mouth that is!). Went to bed really early last night as was knackered and had only smelly clothes to go out in anyway!!
Its Chile Independence Day celebrations yesterday and today and apparently its 'Army Day' today. Will go and see that later on I think with my bunkmate Lisa.
Lots of love from the Southern Hemisphere. xxx
