So after spending nearly a week vegetating on the beach, I thought I would go for a bit of culture. Day trip to Chichen Itza booked!
It was a two and a half hour drive from Cancun, so I was picked up at 7.30am. Sat with some nice fellow Brits and a lady from Chile, and had a bit of a doze. In my ignorance I thought Chichen Itza was just the pyramid looking thing you see in the pictures, but it is in fact the remains of a Mayan city (and is one of the new 7 wonders of the world).
It was incredibly hot when we arrived - feeling your feet burning when the guide is trying to tell you important facts is quite off putting. The first site we saw was the Great Ball Court, this was an open area a bit wider than a hockey pitch and about twice as long with high walls along each side. Two teams try to get a ball to their captains who then have to get it through a ring on the wall. Hmmm sounds a bit like basketball I thought as I concentrated on my burning flesh, but no - the players are only allowed to use their elbows, knees, chest and hips to play the ball. Cue 'hilarious' example of guide lying on the floor thrusting his hips to show us how it was done! And the reward for winning this game? The WINNING captain presents his head to the losing captain who beheads him! Apparently it was an honour to win and you went straight to heaven. Maybe we can incorporate some of these ideas into our hockey matches ; )
The rest of the tour was pretty good, and the Mayan buildings were quite awe inspiring, especially El Castillo the pyramid.
After a lovely lunch of local mexican dishes, we drove to a Cenote, which is a natural freshwater underground sink hole. I swam in the dark 150 feet deep water looking up to the hole in the ground way above me. Long vines hung down, and small waterfalls rained down - it was like a scene from a movie. Truly breathtaking (apart from all the other tourists obviously).
Neat tequila on the coach back ended a really good day.
Photos will follow - these Westin business centre PC´s are majorly locked down, and yes I have tried with all my bestest IT geek knowledge!!
