Having had 2 1/2 weeks of being looked after I now have another couple of weeks in Costa Rica on my own. Quite randomly I picked Monteverde as my first stop. After a 4 hour minibus trip on roads that quite honestly I would probably not attempt to drive on in the uk (Road is a very loose term here - dirt track with potholes is probably more accurate) I arrived at Pension Santa Elena hostel. I had treated myself to a private room with bathroom and breakfast for $20, bit of a bargain. I had a really good nights sleep due to a real mattress and not being woken up by a cockerel, and then a HOT shower. Yes this is the life! The next few days were spent hanging out at the hostel - trying to look like a hip and trendy backpacker Ha ha. I did a coffee and chocolate tour, visited a bat sanctuary and did a night walk. This involved wandering around the forest at night with a bunch of strangers with only a torch to light the way, it was cool though and we saw a sloth, a kinkajou and lots of birds and insects. I also did zip lining which was really great, I did 13 lines one of which was 1 km long. Monteverde is in the cloud forest so we 'zipped' through cloud which is a bit freaky when you can't see the other end, but it was an amazing feeling.
Having kept on extending my stay ( I found it very hard to leave hot water and a comfy bed) I had managed to spend 5 days being very touristy in Monteverde so I was ready for my next place - Montezuma!
