We woke to a cloudy day and I did say to Rod I feel like just wandering along today at no great pace. We had breakfast at the market - it was a huge and great market, we bought food for a picnic along the way. Only 42km's today - we know its a rough track to Carcasonne so it will be slow. We started off slowly and still we passed a few cyclists on the track struggling along with their skinny wheels, yipeee for our 29er's we said they just roll over the rough stuff and yet they are fast too with the tyres we have on them. I had a message from Sandy and Roger great friends of ours that they would be passing through Carcassone about 1.30pm - mmmm lets put the pace on!!! We didn't leave until 11am this morning so lets see if you can do it. The legs got pumped and we started to fly along and what was actually a single track, all that mountain bike training around Lake Taupo started to pay off, a bit different with the bags & panniers on the back, at times we averaged 25km an hour, hard to believe we got to the mighty medieval city way ahead of Roger & Sandy, had time to have a shower, eat our picnic, and hang out of our balconies waiting for them.
Hotel Bristol is right on the canal - cheap as chips and we have a huge room - Fantastic. I love Carcasonne, we have been here before and had a fantastic time. This city was declared world heritage by UNESCO in 1997. The old city is enclosed in its powerful walls. This city has 52 towers, rich in history of 2600 years and 1000 years of military architecture has become a major curiosity in the region and has a magic about it.
We had a celebratory beer & then espresso with Roger & Sandy and many many laughs too, then they headed on towards Toulouse, we will be staying with them in a couple of weeks and it will be a great time.
402km's in 7 days straight - total km's since Arcachon 487km - whoopy. We are roughly 80km's to the coast - fantastic effort Team Rod&Jacq.
This evening we found a great place and had a wonderful salad each, my legs are aching and I am going to bed early tonight.
