On first impressions, Phi Phi was very busy and touristy, which wasn't what we were really after, but once the crowds from the ferry had disappeared and we were settled in to our guesthouse, we really started to enjoy being on the island. Our guesthouse was situated at the edge of the 'tourist village' (Ban Ton Sai) so it was nice and quiet, but within a short walking distance of everything. The village was full of small little streets, pedestrians only, no vehicles, crammed with tourist offices, diving agencies, guesthouses, hotels, shops and restaurants. We had a favourite place for a cheap yummy breakfast, and tried out a few different restaurants for dinner. The afternoon we arrived, we just walked around the streets and down to the main beach (Lo Dalum) to see what it was like. The next day we spent at the beach, which despite it being very crowded, was absolutely beautiful, almost lagoon like, with ultra shallow, turquoise water and thick, green vegetation surrounding it. Monday, we went on a mini hike to a beach called Long Beach which was only accessible by long tail boat or the jungley pathway. It was definitely worth the walk as the beach was lovely and a lot less busy than Lo Dalum. We spent a while sunbathing and had something to eat, before it chucked it down with rain and we decided to head back.
Whilst walking back through the village we randomly bumped into two of Lee's school mates, Luke and Greg, who just so happened to be on Phi Phi the same days as us! We arranged to meet up with them that evening for drinks. We started off chatting and drinking at a bar on one of the streets, before moving down to the beach bars and having a dance and attempting to jump through rings of fire (skipping ropes on fire), which wasn't perhaps the best idea! Jess still has the scars to show from it!!
The next day we met up with Luke and Greg again and hired kayaks to go and explore the nearby beaches. We visited Monkey Beach first, which as you may have guessed is so named because of the monkeys that inhabit it!! We did a bit of snorkelling there, then headed off to a cove a bit further away which was absolutely beautiful. There was hardly anyone there, the water was perfectly clear and turquoise and the snorkelling was good. After a mini nap on the beach, we headed back to return the kayaks - the journey back wasn't quite so fun as the waves had got really choppy and it was pretty knakering kayaking for what seemed like miles... with a hangover!! That evening we all went and chilled at one of the bars, drinking buckets and playing card games!
Saturday morning we packed up, said goodbye to Luke and Greg who were off to Singapore the following day, and caught our ferry to the next island on our list, Koh Lanta.
