We had really struggled to find accommodation over Christmas as we hadn't booked in advance, but eventually found some on Koh Lanta. We arrived at the resort, but wern't too happy with our room. It was a little hut on stilts with just a bed and a bathroom open to the elements, which although would have been fine usually, we wanted something a bit nicer over Christmas. So we stayed one night, then moved on to another resort we found had a room available a bit further down the beach.
Christmas Eve we went into town for a late breakfast and a look around before chilling on Khlong Dao beach nearby. That evening we went back to our resort (which was overlooking Long Beach), showered, then walked along the beach until we found a nice restaurant with mellow lighting, relaxing tunes and a chilled out vibe to eat at. We had a yummy (slightly more expensive) bbq meal as our Christmas treat, then chilled out with a few drinks in one of the mini hut/sofa combos they have in Thailand and played cards.
Christmas morning we sat in bed and opened our presents that we had kindly been given by our families when Lyn came out to visit. We had breakfast at our resort, then chilled on the beach in our santa hats!! It felt very strange being on a beach at Christmas, and we both really missed home a lot. After some nice long skype chats in the internet cafe, we went back to the same restaurant for dinner, and had another relaxing evening on the beach, watching fireworks and lanterns being lit and sent off into the night sky.
Boxing day was a bit of a write off as Jess wasn't very well and spent the whole day in the room, near the bathroom! Overall, Christmas in Thailand just wasn't as good as being at home! We wouldn't moan about being on a beach, but next year will definitely be spent at home in the cold with all the family! Koh Lanta had its positives, it wasn't anywhere near as crowded as other places and the beaches were big and the water gorgeous, but again there wasn't much of a traveller vibe where we were staying, and that may have made Christmas a bit more enjoyable.
Sunday 27th we said our goodbyes to Koh Lanta, and caught a ferry to Ao Nang, a small beach town on the mainland near Krabi town.
