After a 4 hour journey from Arequipa to a small village called Chivay, a picturesque village near the mouth of the Colca Canyon, paradise awaited us! Chivay is however the biggest town in the Colca Canyon.
We got a taxi from outside the bus station to some Hot Springs. The springs were gorgeous and really nicely done too, with the water fed into very clean tiled swimming pools and with lockers and hot showers as well. Just what we needed after the bus journey. We spent about an hour in the hot pool before getting out and taking a slightly cooler shower before heading in to town to get some lunch.
The scenery was incredible, we both agreed that it has to be the nicest view we had ever seen, totally amazing, you had to be there to really appreciate it!
After a short stay in Chivay, and a yummy alpaca-burger and ice ceam we took another bus journey, this time to a place called Cabanaconde, a small town that holds amazing views of the Colca Canon. The Colca Canon is the second deepest canon in the world, it is more than twice as deep as the Grand Canon in the United States.
The bus journey was a late night one (well it was actually only 6pm but sun sets really early so was pitch black the whole way!) and along with our friend Annie, we were the only tourists on board! Considering there were no street lights on the mountain roads you would think that the driver would drive carefully but no, he was racing through the mountains at stupid speeds with only his head lights to guide him. Lee, to say the least was not impressed!
(We have agreed that we will from now on take day time buses, they are a little bit safer and Lee doesn´t seem to be as worried!)
At 7am (you read that right!) we went on a 2 hour trek up a bumpy, rocky hill side to take photos of the Colca Canon. The route we took lead us to the road we needed to be on to catch our departing bus from just outside Cabanconde back to Arequipa! These 2 days were the best yet, so much fun with views that took your breath away.
Next stop Cusco.....
