We arrived in Kuala Lumpar mid afternoon and headed to our hostel (Equator Hostel) and once we had checked in, went for a mini walk around the area. From first impressions KL was a very hectic, busy, built up city where people sped around on mopeds as if their lives depended on it. We walked through a massive mall (and we mean 10 floors massive!) to the nearby streets which were very bustley with the smell of fresh street food being cooked, along with colourful fruit stalls selling just about every fruit on the planet. After eating at a street food stall we walked to Chinatown, down the well known Petaling Street, which was full of market stalls, and then proceeded to get hounded by locals trying to sell us stuff!
The next day, after a hot and humid nights sleep, we headed to Little India whilst on the way stopping at various mosques and museums. Walking around KL was not a pleasant experience as it was so hot and sweaty - as soon as we stepped outside our hostel we were drenched in sweat! The roads were also not very pedestrian friendly, it took forever to cross them as there was so much traffic, and the tram and trains didn't tend to stop anywhere near the main tourist attractions! Once we finished our walk we headed to the Lakeside Gardens which were beautiful, but again a pain to get to and a nightmare to get back to our hostel from!
We headed out on Thursday to the Petronas Towers and KLCC shopping center (8 storey shopping center next to the towers) in the heart of KL - they were huge and pretty spectacular, with the famous viewing bridge half-way up. We were too lazy to get up ultra early to try and get free tickets to go up to the bridge, but as we had seen many other cities from up top, we weren't too bothered about it. After wandering around the area nearby, we went back to our hostel to book our accommodation and transport for our next stop the following morning, the Cameron Highlands.
All in all KL was a very hectic, built up city that we didn't really enjoy!! It was good to see the city and it's nice to say we have been but it wouldn't be on our list to go back and visit again! The one plus point however, was that the monorail gave you very good views of the city and was always on time!
