Hamburg is a tale of two cities. The beautiful harbours, scenery and architecture to be explored at day time and it's fast paced fun loving night!
We spent our morning down at the central harbour, accessible by local underground train lines. The speeding underground train whistles through endless tunnels, then suddenly enters daylight and you are travelling along Hamburgs epic industrial harbour. Our heads were turned and fixed on the busy scenery around us, the hustle and bustle revolving this beautiful, vast harbour.
We took a boat tour on the river through its many alley ways, ports and hideaways and saw the heartbeat of an industry still very much in full swing.
We then visited the Beatlesmania museum after a quick walk up the promenade facing a swift spring breeze. The museum was host to endless memorabilia and even allowed avid fans to record their very own karaoke version of a Beatles classic. A must for any diehard 'beats' fan.
Exploring the city we noticed the rivers of the harbour below extended upwards to the city centre. Germany's very own Venice it would seem! The beautifully built 'Rathaus', the modern tv tower and even the largest fun fair in North Germany are all hidden within Hamburgs charm, and are all walking distance from the central 'Bahnhof'.
We stayed in the newly opened 'Superbude' hotel, in St Pauli and five minutes walk from the Reeperbahn, Hamburgs party area! The hotel itself was spotless, expected so soon after its opening. What wasn't expected was its eccentric interior. Wheelbarrow seats, plunger hangers and cushions made from denim jeans, just to name a few. An acquired taste I would imagine!
The Reeperbahn offered a wide range of nightly entertainment. The area is noticeably mixed in amongst Hamburgs red light district, but don't be too put off by this as you can still find charming pubs, Irish bars and packed nightclubs in amongst the darker side of Hamburgs nightlife. Our night consisted of drinking with locals in front of a great live band, in a small Irish bar just off from the main strip and then led to a more lively nightclub just across the street. The range of various nightlife therefore suits everyones taste for a good night!
Hamburg should be at the top of the list for anyone's tour of Germany, especially for students or the younger generation that are looking for a good party. For you Hamburg is a must!
