Hawaii
So I arrive in the USA at around 2.30am, the airport looks like it's about 60 years old and nothing makes sense. I was supposed to "come out from security and see directly In front of baggage doors speedishuttle" after walking about for a while and not finding anything as the whole airport was silent apart from our flight I ended up grabbing a taxi to my hostel... I'm thankful I at least have the money to be able to get a taxi!
Whist waiting another 15 minutes for the taxi I did get to chat to a nice American girl who had been in American Samoa on business so that made up for it a little!
I finally made it to the hostel by 4.30 and slept until 8.30 as the room was so light and hot so I got up and headed to a beach with a French guy David and 2 American girls on holiday. Wikki beach was packed and some people had set up what can only be described as a full on kitchen compleat with chairs and a table! These guys take it seriously!
Today was the 4th of July, Independence Day Which means one thing for the Americans booze, meaty BBQs and of course fireworks!! The hostel had a BBQ planned at 4 so I headed down with the people I met and had a great time! The BBQ lived up to expectations as there was way to much meat and the steaks were the size of a small dog!
later we watched the fireworks over Waikiki beach before going to a club! Good night out in Hawaii!!
My first burger in the US was at Teddy's burger joint and was definitely an experiance... Sure nothing beats a Fergburger for taste but with over 12 different kinds of fries and types of burgers I haven't even heard of you can't complain. One thing that is really striking with the Americans is that they are super polite, in the UK you mainly have foreigners or people who can't get a better job so are usually unhappy but here they are really happy all "yes sir"
Hangovers lingering from the night before I headed out walking, the city of Honolulu is a really nice place and they had some great shops! As it was a national holiday all the shops had some big deals on so I did buy a few little bits, that afternoon I took a 2 hour surf lesson at the famous Waikiki beach! The instructor I had was hardly the best but I was soon stood up on the board riding some waves! My ribs were really bruised the following day!
I had booked a trip to pearl harbour the following day which picked me up at 6am from the hostel, so I had an early night!
Pearl harbour had been somewhere I had wanted to visit for years so I was excited to visit!
There were 3 main areas I visited one was the Arizona memorial and film, the Missouri battleship and blowfin submarine.
The Arizona was one of the largest battleships of all time but was sunk by the Japanese during the attack over 900 people died when a bomb smashed through to the weapons deck. The ship was left where it sunk
As a permanent grave for the people who died that day. Even these days anyone who sailed on her can be berried with full honours!
As it's out in the harbour you have to take a boat from the cinemas which explains to you the whole war in the Pacific. It was an interesting memorial and was shaped in a sort of U to signify the happy days before the way and after with the low point being pearl harbour.
The battleship Missouri played a key role all though the war and was eventually the ship that sailed in to Tokyo for the surrender of the Japanese forces and you can see the actually speech that was written and then read by president.
On the way back to the city we had a city tour which was good and then I just relaxed all afternoon before we had a little party on the beach until the early hours of the morning!
