Arrived in Latacunga a bit worse for wear after four days of the squids and having not eaten for the last two days.. Who would like to be travelling alongside me when I haven´t eaten?! An angel at the hostel gave me crushed garlic and lemon juice (I felt like I was back at the blue house!) and that combined with the antibiotics worked like magic.. Up at 6am the next morning to catch the bus to a little town called Zumbahua up in the mountains where the Saturday markets were in full swing.. It was wonderful to be wandering in between the food stalls in particular, lots of fish, fried dumplings, pork and different coloured beans. I watched one woman pull the teeth out of a pig´s head and proceed to cut up the cheeks. I almost became a vegetarian again on the spot. Lots of bananas, red, green, `fat fingers´, they have so many different types in this country, and fresh cheese.. Drag ourselves away from the market and jump in a `camioneta´, a ute, for an hour´s journey to the Quilotoa crater, a huge green lake in the crater of an extinct volcano.. At 3,800m we slide 300m down into the crater before dragging ourselves back up, slowly, to the top.. Good exercise but tough at this altitude! Freezing temperatures and we are staying in a little concrete hut with no heating.. Thank goodness for socks and sleeping bags with hoods! Will continue the `loop´ tomorrow..

Jules Imagined the markets El...and the crater...:) bet the water was a magic green...and trying to get out from the crater at that altitude would have tested you...especially after being unwell...Yes...it must be absolutely freezing...brrrr.....concrete and no heating...the beaches in Columbia must be sounding ever so alluring after climbing so many mountains....It's good to hear that the garlic and antibiotics have worked...those bananas too...What a tethered life we live back here compared to the villagers in the Andes!....Stay safe darling...Mamaxxx
