Hola my friends. It has been a while since our last journal update and mucho has gone on. We decided to skip Costa Rica and Panama out of our travels this time around and got a flight to Quito, Ecuador (wich happened to stop in Costa Rica and Panama so we can officially say we have been there too).
From hot and muggy Central America Quito was refreshingly cool. We got hot showers for the first time since we´ve been away and blankets on our bed. Best couple of nights sleep we´ve had in ages! We spent our first moring in Quito New Town adjusting to the high Altitude of 2850m while rushing from travel agent to travel agent trying to score a cheap last minute Galapagos Tour. In the end we splurged for a 2nd class boat called the ´Aida Maria´ and got a resonable discount but still well over our budget but also well worth.
The next morning we headed to Quito Old Town where very high on a hill stands an unfinished basilica which we climb to the very top of the bell tower and got some amazing scenic pics of the whole of Quito (we actually got a lift to the third floor and climbed the rest) and then a traditional Ecuadorain lunch of deepfried pastries followed by a very cheesy potato soup. Not great! (to be honest food has been pretty poor all over) On the way back to the New Town some filthy #*#*#* spat a stinking wad of mucus in my face and while i was distracted snatched my camera. Lost some good pics of Monkeys (proper ones in the wild - sam was very excited to see them as you can imagine) and scenic pics from our walk up the volcano in Isla De Ometepe...
We got a flight to the Galalapagos a couple of days early and spent our time in Puerto Ayora a small pretty tourist town on Isla Santa Cruz. A 3km trail took us to Bahia Tortuga (Turtle Bay) the most beautiful beach Sam and I have ever seen with perfect white coral-sand stretching either side and backed by mangrove and cactus trees, Marine Iguana´s chilling in the aqua blue surf or sunbathing on the beach. It was perfect untill we got atttacked by bitting horse flies and burnt to sh1t.
Our boat tour was excellant. We were over 20 years younger than anyone else but met some great people, saw some pretty cool landscapes, sea and bird life. Sam swam and snorkelled with Sea Lions, and at one point about 20 white tipped reef sharks up to 2m long (shat his pants whatever he says).
Tomorrow we have a 24 hour bus ride to Lima, Peru where our Inca Tour will begin...
