Traveling Monkey's
Ok, so I'm not really in Bernal right now, but that is what I wanted to write about. Yesterday, the 15th, my group of students and I took a bus to Bernal, a small city about an hour north of Querétaro (I think, I wasn't driving). The town is famous for two things: One of the largest rocks in the world (they think it was a meteor) and gorditas negras. Both were worth it. The Peña de Bernal looks like a giant rocky mountain and is rather dificult to climb. Sure that 7 year old girl made it as far as we did, but she was tough! Seriously though, the hardest part is that its very steep, you start at 2000 feet in altitude, and finish at around 4000 feet. I'm not use to air that thin. I already struggles playing basketball twice last week in Querétaro, which is around 2500 feet in altitude. But we made the climb and it was worth it.
After making our way back down, our first encounter was with a margarita stand. You know what place in the US could use a good margarita stand? All of `em. So for 3 dollars we got great margaritas with handmade cups you could keep. Two of those and the two best gorditas I've had in my life, and I was a happy boy. We spent awhile wandering the streets of the small city and checking out some shops (I bought some sweet sesame seeds), before heading back. Oh yeah, Nick and I took pictures of butterflies on flowers, totaly manly. Lucy feed crackers to a scared kitten she treed. All in all, a good day.
To top it off, I spent the night at a lounge (It cant be a bar because there was really nice seating and music everywhere to go with the music videos projected on the wall, and it can't be a dance-club because there was very little room to dance). It was the nicest club I've ever been in, anywhere, and I had a great time. Spoke with friends of the family that Nick, butterfly-guy in my class, lives with, and understood mostly everything they said. Not bad considering we split two large bottles of Bacardi. I might have actually been in a Bacardi commercial, I'm not sure. Then I managed to not only lead the taxi driver to my home while drunk in a foreign land, but had a comprehensible and enjoyable conversation with him. If thats any measuring stick, I'm think I'm doing well.
So enough about Saturday. I hope everyone is doing well, and I promise I will add a picture album sometime this week. Lightly promise. Ok, bye for now.
