Trailor on Tour
The plan yesterday was to go and lie on the beach, but it turned out to be really windy and cloudy, so we were only there for about 30 mins - still enough time for a dip though.
Today I booked to go on a bus tour to the Great Ocean Road, which picked me up from the hostel at 0700 and headed into central Melbourne to meet the rest of the group. We drove out through Geelong and Anglesea until we hit the coast at Bell's Beach, where we stopped briefly for a coffee. Bell's beach is one of the premier surfing beaches in the world and the nearby town has a shopping mall devoted entirely to surf shops.
Just past Bell's we picked up the Great Ocean Road, which runs along some truly spectacular coastline on the left, with the Otway Mountain Range on the right. The road was incredibly windy, with lots of steep inclines, sharp bends and sheer drops, but the scenery was breathtaking and reminded me very much of the coast road in California, which I drove with mum, dad and Lee years ago.
We stopped at a little place called Kennet River for lunch and I decided to try the shark, as it's a local speciality. I was really disappointed as it was tasteless - maybe I was just unlucky. Whilst having lunch, a local couple who lived nearby came to tell us that they had koalas in the trees in their yard, so off we went. They looked like little cute, cuddly teddy bears, but can be quite aggressive.
Onwards to Apollo Bay and The Twelve Apostles, which were picture postcard perfect, the only slight distraction being the damn flies. I inhaled one up my nose and spent ten minutes blowing like mad trying to dislodge the little b*****. I could feel it moving and it was stuck right at the top of my left nostril. Visions of going to the hospital crossed my mind, but thankfully it came out and was still alive - but not for long!
Our final stop was at Loch Ard Gorge, named for an Englsih ship which was shipwrecked here in 1878 in which 55 of the 57 people on board perished.
The journey back to Melbourne via the freeway was uneventful and I was dropped back at about 2130.
When I got back my dorm had been taken over by 7 Englsih lads, one from Wilmington! The resultant choas was overwhelming - smelly trainers, pants, clothes and rubbish everywhere. It reminded me of Lee's room back home when he was their age! It was very amusing to watch one of them disappear to the bathroom with 4 different types of hair product, a hairdryer and some straighteners, putting my attempts at grooming whilst travelling to shame.
To bed early as contemplating going back to the tennis tomorrow before flying out. S xx
