Trailor on Tour
Hello again everyone, ready for your next cultural lesson!! If you're sitting comfortably I'll begin.....
Roughly 95% of the population of Thailand practises Buddhism and it is thought that there the number of statues of Buddha (large or small) outnumbers the population. Thailand is 543 years ahead of the West, that makes me very old!
Feet are the lowest and 'dirtiest' part of the body and conversely the head is the highest. You have to keep your feet on the floor, not on a chair and you must never touch anyone or point to anything with your feet. You must also never step over anyone or anything on the ground.
There are lots of Monks wandering around (every Thai male is expected to become a Monk for a short period in his life) and women aren't allowed to touch or sit next to a Monk and his belongings. Well you learn something new every day.
From what I have seen so far Bangkok is a very Westernised city, especially in comparison to India. There are proper roads and pavements, you are not consistently pestered on the streets, the cars actully look road worthy and they sell diet coke - better than the Thums Up brand that was available in India!! No sign of salad cream yet, but we live in hope.
Tomorrow (Sat) I am getting the bus from here to Phuket to meet up with friends. The bus leaves at 1830 and arrives at 1100 the next day - surely it has to be better than the spine crunching journey in India?!
For some reason my body clock has gone awry, I think it must have been the overnight flight from Delhi, which left at midnight (it was 31 degrees) and arrived here at 0600 local time. I am wide awake until about 0430 am and then can't drag myself out of bed before about lunch time - I think I must be back on UK time as I am now 6 hours ahead of GMT.
Shopping here is also quite good, although all the women are under 5 feet and a size 6 (UK). Maybe I should start that diet soon!!!!!
Anyway, hope you are all well.
Loving receiving your e-mails and messages.
S xxxxx
