Trailor on Tour
In Dunedin I had managed to purchase a very cheesy tape from 1989 (I was in the upper 6th form at that time) and I played it about 5 times on the drive. It was an aural delight with tunes by such fab bands as Soul II Soul, Milli (not singing at all) Vanilli, Black Box, Depeche Mode and Betty Boop. My apologies to those of you who are too old, or too young for that matter, to have even heard of these poptastic sounds. For the rest of you - how old do you feel?!
En route I stopped at Moeraki Bay to look at the boulders - very strange. I half expected a dinosaur to tach from one of them at any moment.
I arrived in Queenstown and checked into the Hippo Lodge - had to be done really, didn't it?! A very stinking, battered and fly bitten Nic turned up not long after me and headed straight for the shower - thankfully. We then both went out and had dinner with her friends from the trek, before heading back for a reasonably early night. Rather tame considering it was St Patrick's Day and I had just discovered that my Great-Great Grandfather had played rugby for Ireland in the early 1900's. Still, as Dad pointed out - do I really need an excuse to have a Guinness!!
The next morning we had to change hostels asn headed to the YHA - a bit like a prison, but it will do. The Hippo Lodge was also quite disappointing and the people were not very friendly at all - shame. Once we had done all Nic's festering (and my mildly soiled) laundry, we headed into town, found a graet restaurant called 19th and became sophisticated ladies doing lunch - well tried anyway. We had a superb bottle of local Peregrine Sauvignon Blanc and a platter of antipasto in brilliant sunshine overlooking the lake - my birthday had started early.
Some retail therapy was then on the agenda, before heading back to the hostel to make ourselves (more) beautiful for our night out with 2 of the girls from Nic's trek - Amelie and Eva. We went to Fraser's to see a band, who were average and I had a splitting headache, so we headed home early. A good job as I was up most of the night being sick, shivering and sweating. I lay on the sofa in the communal room feeling very sorry for myself and hoping to be better for my birthday cruise - I was on the top bunk and had no desire to have to climb down from there during the night. S xx
