It's amazing what a good nights rest will do. I was up early, got ready and we went for a quick coffee and pastry at the Mafraria. We walked to the port where the ferry takes you across to Lisbon. Tickets were easy to purchase at the machines for 2 euros. This is a the daily commute for people who live in Barrrerio and work in Lisbon. It's a quick ferry ride over (15 minutes).
We walked around for a couple of hours before our free tour from DiscoveryTours. The streets were quiet but workers were busy setting up tables and cleaning up. We made our way to the park near the Museu dos Coches where the tour group was to meet, met the group and started on our way. I learned so much about Portugal's history today. I love these tours as the tour guides are passionate about history and their city so they enjoy their jobs. Why is European history so much more interesting than Canadian history?
After the tour we had lunch at a cute little side street restaurant. 6.50€ got us an entree (chicken, rice, fries) with 1/2 a liter of wine, bread, dessert and a coffee. What a great deal! It pays to go off the beaten track to find something to eat. It really was like home made.
We continues our on our journey and walked a total of 28 km today. It was tiring. Up hills, down hills and tripping on the cobble stone side walks and roads (they are beautiful though). I'm dubbing Lisbon the 'European San-Francisco'. These are my 3 reasons. The have a bridge that resembles the Golden Gate Bridge. I told Peter that the moment I saw it. Today we learned more about the bridge and that it was designed by the man who designed the Golden Gate Bridge. Secondly, the hills in Lisbon are steep. We also learned the legend behind the big hills here. They say there are 7 hills in total. Thirdly, they have trollies.
We visited so many places...too many to mention.
We raced back home, freshened up and had a wonderful meal at Peter's sisters again. I'm being spoiled with the Portuguese culture.
