This will sound crazy, but I'm tired of traveling. My neck is stiff and I could really use a massage! My own be would be nice too! Enough complaining already, I know!
I enjoyed my day trip to Pisa yesterday that I decided to venture into Siena for the day. There was no rushing around and no final countdown to worry about. I actually had a good chunk of time this morning sitting on the train, waiting.
The train ride was not the best. The scenery was stunning but the company on the train was annoying to say the least. There were two woman talking in a foreign language, not Italian. It was very loud. Almost yelling. Another group of people, Gypsies I think, were snapping their chewing gum, REALLY LOUD! It was almost like they were competing on who could be the loudest! I guess I could have switched coaches. They were not practicing their train etiquette, if that exists! Oh well!
Taking the scenic route has it's advantages and disadvantages. I didn't do it on purpose but I arrived at my destination within a reasonable amount of time. I realized on the way back it was not the most efficient route. GPS doesn't always give you the best directions.
Siena is beautiful. I hit all the hot spots and came early enough to avoid all the tourists. My favourite spot was Porta De San Marco! It overlooks the city and countryside. It was amazing. I sat on a bench and had my lunch. There was a tour bus with a ton of teenagers hanging around. They were rather noisy. It would have been great to just take in the sights without the sounds!
I stopped into this great shop that had specially made linens and carved olive wood pieces. I bought a pestle and mortar. I have a little collection and could not pass up the opportunity.
I made my way back to the station via the short route. I also grabbed a drink from a 99 cent store! Yes, they have them here too!!
I'm sitting on the train back. Looks like we have a little problem. Our coach is filled with smoke. Yep. Smoke. We've opened the windows and they are saying every car is the same. The train is still moving though so I hope that's a good sign. If something was wrong they probably would have stopped the train. Hmmm. The train is slowing down. Did I speak too soon? Oops. It's just the next station. Someone just walked by and said that everything was ok. Phew! Oh, welcome to adventure-land! That was the excitement of the day.
I have to sort my luggage out tonight because I'm traveling light to London, UK. I have 1 hour to get from the airport to the train station when I return to Florence on the 24th. If I brought all my luggage, I would run the risk of missing the train because I would have to wait for checked baggage. It's the last train out to Naples, in fact. I don't want to chance that. I found a baggage storage area at the train station that will hold my luggage for the time I'm gone. It's rather pricey but there isn't much I can do about it. I'll be putting the essentials in a backpack and only bringing carry on luggage with me on my flight.
