This morning was a quiet one in my very hot hostel room. The room has no windows and no air conditioner and it was about 30 degrees outside. There was a fan that stood about 4 feet off the ground and my bunk was 8 feet off the ground. Needless to say I didn't get much sleep last night.
I booked onto a double decker bus tour and went around the city that showed the highlights. The weather for this tour was much better than the tour I took while in Ireland. Madrid is a very beautiful city with old buildings and many museums. No time for a museum visit on this trip to Madrid.
I met Mel, Michelle, Joyce and Sarah (from Pueblo Ingles) in the evening and we walked around and went to a couple of bars for drinks and tapas. The theory is that when you order a drink you are also given a small sample of something (olives, potato salad, sardines etc) on a small plate. The small plate is used to cover the top of your drink so that nothing gets into it. But the Spaniards have figured out that the customers will pay for the tapas so now they are charging. It can get expensive but at least the drinks are really cheap. (Sept 12)
I walked and walked and walked today. I went to the Retiro Parque and the Botanical Gardens. Joyce, Sarah and I met for lunch before Sarah left to go back to England. Sarah had lived in Benicassim (where I am going tomorrow) for three years a while ago so it was fun to get her take on what I would be experiencing once I settle into life in Spain. Joyce, my fellow Canadian, is heading to Paris tomorrow to meet her sister and then going back to Canada before going back to teaching in January at Ryerson University.
Tomorrow I am up really early to catch the train to Benicassim. I will arrive at noon and Paloma my landlady is going to pick me up at the station. I am looking forward to getting unpacked for awhile and settling into a bit of a routine. (Sept 13)
This is a short one but watch for more soon.
I miss everyone very much.
Love Tove
