So, we have now been in Australia for 3 months. It's gone so quick!
Since my last update we've been quite busy. We finally went to coogee beach which was something we'd been talking about since we got to Sydney and to be honest I wasn't that impressed. I'd heard lots about it and that it was nicer than Bondi, but I think I prefer Bondi.
Jacob was sharing a room with a guy called Dash who is trying to become a stand up comedian, we went along to watch him along with 4 or 5 other comedians. Dash was by far the funniest and we've now picked up one of his phrases....Swisho!
We've also been to Cronulla beach which is about an hour away from Sydney, it was nice but the weather wasn't the great so we couldn't swim there. There was a surf competion going on and the grass area by the beach had food stalls and a band playing screamo music.....i wasn't a fan!
In the evening after we got back from Cronulla we went Ice Skating on Bondi beach for our friend Hayley's birthday, it was the winter festival and there was a log cabin set up an Christmas trees. It was quite a unique experience, at one point I had managed to get sand in my ice skate! It was amazing though, ice skating with the waves in the backgroud. After Ice skating we went to a few bars and ended up in a gay bar, was having a really good night and went to buy some drinks to find my purse had been stolen. I looked around for it asked the bar staff and of course nothing was handed in, I tried calling the bank to cancel my cards but couldn't get through which was lucky as a bouncer saw me upset and asked what was wrong, I told him and he said that it had been handed in! Of course all the money had gone but at least all my cards were still there.
The next day we went to the Aquarium, which wasn't that impressive, I expected bigger from Australia! Was still a good day though. In the evening we went on a ghost tour, our friend Kayleigh had organised it as she was leaving Sydney to do her 3 months farm work to get her second year visa. It was fun but at $42 each, it wasn't really worth the price. We were all given characters, I was a leader of a gang that beat a man to death and threw him over a rock, Nikki was a girl who had died and Jacob was the care takers assistant and had ring bell and shout 'bring out your dead'......Richard didn't get a part and I can't remember what Kayleigh's part was!
Last weekend we went to a place called Port Stephens which is about 2 and a half hours north of Sydney. We hired a car, our little green bug, and stayed in a backpackers, we booked a cabin but it had been raining non stop the week leading up to our stay and there was flooding so we couldn't get to the cabin. The owners have a pet Kangaroo called Josie who had free run of the place so we saw her quite often, lying on the grass or trying to get into the kitchen area. She was very friendly and let us pat her.
That night we stayed in the hostel and drank, none of us were very drunk but the next day Richard was so hungover, we drove into the town to get lunch but Jacob had to pull over so that Richard could be sick.......down a drain! hahahaha!
Saturday while we were ther it rained all day which was a shame as it is a beach town, we walked up to a place called Tomaree head which had amazing views, at one point the wind an rain were so heavy I though we'd be blown off the side of the cliff!
That evening we went into the local town pub for dinner, when we walked in it was literally like in a western where everyone turned and stared at us! It was like going back to the 90's, men had mullets and the dress sense was awful! Had a fun night though. We also had a little cabin party for Jacob as it was his last weekend. Me and Nikki got balloons and banners and put them up.
About 2 weeks ago we went to a place called Pyrmont bridge hotel where on Thursdays they have a 'Man or a mouse' steak challenge. It cost $20 and you get a kilo of steak, chips and a salad, if you eat it all with in an hour, you get the cost of the meal back. So we all went along hoping for a free dinner.
The steaks were HUGE! And underneath the ginormous steak was a mountain of chips.....and a tiny bowl of salad. I knew straight away that I wouldn't be able to eat it, but I powered through. Matt was the first to finish within about 20 minutes.....he then helped me and Nikki and ate some of ours, Nikki, Jacob, Rich and Dash managed to finish and get their $20 back but me, Mark and 2 others couldn't finish.
Quite a few of our gang have left now, Shane who was our room mate for 2 and a half months, Jordan, Jacob, Kayleigh. Everyone is moving on to do their own thing, our hostel is quite quiet now, we've been used to their being a big group at dinner and always someone willing to go for a drink or suggesting something to do. But soon enough me and Rich will be on our way up the east coast meeting new people and seeing new places. I've loved my time in Sydney but I am looking forward to moving on.
I'll try not to leave it so long until my next post, I'm sure i've forgotten things that we've done!
Lots of love,
Totts xxxxx
