We were a bit worried once we got into Amsterdam because Merina, Jojo and I were apparently put on 'standby' for the Johannesburg flight. The whole choir ended up rushing to the next gate (aaallll the way across the airport) so we could get checked in. Luckily, no problems and we all had seats.
We had a bit of time to wander around a little of the Amsterdam airport and look at all the tulip bulbs for sale, but we were backed lined up to board before too long.
Thus began the 11hr plane ride to Johannesburg. Once again, good inflight entertainment and meals. I also got a window seat, and spent a lot of my time either looking out the window or walking around the plane. We flew over Paris, then down over the sea, and over Algeria. We had fantastic clear views of most everything. The Sahara seems to stretch on forever. And the. Suddenly, once you hit Chad, things start going green.
It was cloudy for a while, and then it got dark very quickly. But we got a beautiful view of the street lights of Johannesburg as we flew in. It's a huge city!! We were so glad to get off the plane.
Getting through customs was super easy - they didn't seem to care too much - just stamped out passports. Got all our luggage, then met our guide, Peter, in the waiting area. Picked up some cash from ATMs while we were there and then trekked to the bus.
It was a bit of a drive to get to our hotel, but it was easy to haul our bags up the stairs into the room and have a quick shower before passing out in bed. Joburg!
