We were supposed to be heading right back into Reykjavik, but our tour guide said we'd be making one more stop at a place not many people go to. We drove back to the first waterfall we'd visited that day, Saljalandsfoss. This time we drove past the main waterfall and further down the cliff past a couple smaller waterfalls until we reached a farmer's field. We got off and had to walk through the muddy field to the cliff. You could almost not see the waterfall because it was behind rocks.
We walked down some muddy steps to a stream the was issuing from a fissure in the cliff face. And then we realised that to get to the waterfall we'd seen, we'd have to go through the small opening in the rocks. So we had to wade a little bit in the stream from the waterfall through this crack in the cliff before we came out in a grotto where the waterfall was coming down. We were completely surrounded by rock, and the waterfall was splashing down at the back wall.
It was absolutely gorgeous, and without a guide, we would have never found it. There was even a large boulder I managed to scramble up ontop of to get a better look at the waterfall. It was very peaceful in there with just the splashing water and the rocks. Of course, because it was such an enclosed space and you were right up next to the waterfall, I was once again soaked because of the spray. I could have stayed in there for ages, but it was finally time for our tour to end.
It was a long drive back into Reykjavik, in thick fog too. And by the time I arrived back at KEX, their block party was in full swing so it was really loud in the room. I changed pretty quickly to get out of my still-wet clothes and then went to find Melanie and Lexi. I was going to stay around to listen to the bands playing, but the bar in the hostel was super busy and I was starving. I went for a walk down the main street by myself to find places to eat. But either things were closed, or were closing because it was so late, or they were just sit-down meal places.
I ended up finding a little shop before they closed and got a mozzerella sandwich from their bakery as well as a slice of cake. Because they were closing, I had to go find somewhere to eat my supper. One of the things we hadn't done yet was check out the iconic chruch, Hallgrímskirkja. So took a walk up to the church which was a few blocks off of the main street. I sat out front to eat my supper in the still-bright evening and relaxed a little.
On my way back to the hostel, I stopped by a couple shops to pick up postcards because I wasn't sure when I'd be able to next. Melanie and Lexi said that we'd probably be renting a car tomorrow. I found Melanie and Lexi in the common area by the bar and we hung out for a bit and listened to the music while I ate my little bit of cake. Finally it was time to take a nice warm shower before heading to bed (up early again) and try to sleep, even with the really loud party going on outside the window.
