We arrived in Hong Kong, and it was a bit of a weather change for us. Going from mid-30’s for the last 3 months or so, to 12 degrees, is not nice! Anyway, we took a bus from the airport to our hotel location. Being Chinese New Year, many of the hotels were double the price, so we ended up paying a lot more. The first night hotel was one of the worst and smallest of the whole trip, but also one of the most expensive. However, a big thanks to Mr and Mrs McCulloch, who donated some Marriot reward points, and found us a room at the Renaissance on Hong Kong Island. It was very nice to end our trip staying in a decent hotel room.
So we had 4 days in Hong Kong, and the plan was to just look around the city and tick the tourist boxes. We both wrapped up with a few layers on and got used to wearing trainers again as opposed to just flip flops. The first day, Sabina put me through the delights of another Disneyland park. The one in HK is a lot smaller and luckily for me, only contained one major ride. It was also raining for most of the day, so we only stayed for a few hours and then got the train back to the hotel.
On the next few days, we had very lazy starts, not leaving the hotel till midday or so. The semi-luxury room and the fact that outside looked grey, damp and miserable made us get up just that little bit later! Anyway, when we did get out, we visited a few of the sites to see on the tourist list. HK is a clean and easy to get around city, with all of the landmarks clearly signposted. The island has several hills very close to the shoreline, so it’s easy to get some good views of the city. We visited local markets, sampled the food, and saw some of the many shopping centres that exist. Seeing the lights on all the building that line both sides of the harbour was spectacular. We also saw a good fireworks display that was celebrating the New Year.
Anyway, today is our final day of the trip. Neither of us are looking forward to the 13 hour flight back home to an even colder climate, but it will good to see family and friends again.
