This morning I arrived back from Sapa and after breakfast the plan was to explore some more of Hanoi before my night bus at 6pm.
I started at the Temple of Literature, which was very pretty with its flower designs and architecture. I've decided they think Turtles are sacred here as at the bottom of each tomb stone was a turtle then in the main building was a high gold played Turtle.
I then went to the Old Prison Museum. I learnt how it was built by the French during the Vietnamese war and what disgusting conditions they kept both men and women in. They also tortured them for rebelling against the French leadership. When the Vietnamese overcome the French they got ownership of the prison and releases all of the prisoners. They then used it to imprison the US fighter pilots that were shot down and rescued. Apparently the US prisoners called it the 'Hilton of Hanio'.
The third place I visited was the women's museum. Very interesting how the different tribes go through marriage rituals here and childbirth. It also described the women's role during the war, pictures of the on the front line shooting down fighter pilots and planting rice and sewing the fields with big fat shotguns on their back... Just incase!!
Now I'm sat on the famous sleeper bus heading for Hue...
