We drive into Rotorua this morning, it stinks!! It smells like rotten eggs and stink bombs!
Rotorua has lots of natural geysers, you can see them bubbling away and steaming as you drive past, the sulphur from these is what causes the bad smell... You get used to it after about 30mins .
We checked in and then I got picked up to go White Water Rafting. We got kitted up in all the gear then got a bus to the top of the river and into the Rafts! We practiced our safety manoeuvres and then we were off. It was great fun going down the water falls getting us ready for the Big 7m drop Waterfall!! We landed and all managed to stay in the boat, except on the last little fall where we had to do it standing up with our paddles above our heads! I might have accidentally bumped into the guy next to me to keep my balance, he fell out... Opps!!
After a warm shower we were taken back to the hostel, where I met up with the rest of the group and we got picked up for the Maori Culture evening!
It was great!! We were introduced by a warrior dance and the chief decided if we were friend or foe, when he laid the leaf for us to collect, friend, his wife sang a call to let the tribe know they had guests, and we entered.
We were shown around the village, taught how to play their games, learnt the Huka, their fitness and agility exercises and how to make their weapons and cook their food. They cook it underground.
We then went and watched their show, sings and dances and how they use their weapons. It was great, lots of enthusiasm, noise and intimidation!!
After the show we were given a three course meal, endless buffet from the food they cooked underground. The food was amazing, we were so full afterwards. This style of cooking is called Hangi.
The bus back was quite amusing, the driver was crazy, singing 'she'll be coming round the mountain' as he drive around the roundabout about three times!!
