Hi all. After I wrote last we did meet up with the rest of the group we went treking with and we went to the night bazaar as the flooding has gone down in Chiang Mai. It was much like Bangkok's but less 'pushy'. Zo brought me a pair of shorts for my birthday, although I did have to change in to them to make sure they fit behind the man's stall, apparently looked like I was on the toilet...to be honest it did as I was able to see one of the photos taken by one of the few opportunist photographers in our group. Also had a meal in what turned out to be the most expensive restaurant yet, Dukes, had to pay like 8 pound for a pizza!!! We had one last drink with Mick (from Denmark), Clair (Scotland) and Tom (Fairford, lives down the road from Zo's uncle Jace). They all did treking with us too. We didn't say good bye to Andy and Kaylee as they were heading our way and have been traveling with us up to know.
Wed 05.10.11 - Had a good busy journey up to Chiang Kong, on the Thailand/Laos border, ready for the border crossing in the morning. On the way we saw the most fantastic white temple in the middle of no where. We had a stop here to look around. It seemed to sparkle with diamonds! The following morning we crossed the border/river by long boat. Easy trip, but I have been struggling with the malaria tablets, well me and Zo have. They make us feel sick, so was a struggle for me. Since found out we need to eat a far bigger breakfast with them to be ok. Once in Laos we were all put off by the travel rep to go on the slow boat to Luang Prabang as the weather bus due to be bad, he advised we take the 'VIP' bus...the bus journey was quite easily the worst part of the trip so far!!! Seemed non Vip when we turned up to the bus as it had sacks of rice all the way down the aisle and even a moped in the aisle at the back. The four of us were the only westerners other than about 6 others. The whole jounrney was either fast with sharp corners or slow and incrediably bumpy. To top it off about 6 of the elderly people on board were violetly vomiting for the entire journey. We had to endure this for 13 hours! Once in Luang Prabang it was totally worth it, what an absolutely beautiful place!
Will tell more in this place in the next blog.
